Inquire About This WorkDavid Johansen photographed in New York City, c. 1977, by Bobby Grossman.
As the frontman of the New York Dolls, David Johansen was a crucial bridge between the glam excess of the early 1970s and the punk explosion that followed at CBGB and Max's Kansas City. The Dolls' raw, cross-dressing theatricality influenced a generation of downtown bands even as the group itself burned out fast. Grossman caught Johansen in the easy, off-stage intimacy that defined his access to the scene.
