Biography
Roberta Bayley’s photographs remain among the most direct and authentic visual documents of the New York punk scene.

Roberta Bayley is one of the defining photographers of the New York punk scene.

Closely associated with CBGB and the downtown music community, she created some of the defining images of the era.

Her photograph of the Ramones taken in New York in 1976 was used for the cover of the band's debut album and remains one of the most recognizable images in the history of rock and roll.

Bayley also photographed Blondie, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Television, the Sex Pistols and many of the artists who shaped the visual identity of punk.

Published in 2002, Punk is one of the rarest and most ambitious publications devoted to the visual history of New York punk. Issued in a highly limited edition of just 76 copies, the book presents 24 original photographs by Roberta Bayley documenting the formative years of the downtown music scene between 1975 and 1980. Featured subjects include the Ramones, Blondie, Richard Hell, Television, Iggy Pop, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Damned and many of the artists who defined the era. Each volume was produced as a handcrafted artist's book, housed in a custom slipcase and accompanied by additional signed material, including contributions from Debbie Harry, Richard Hell, John Holmstrom and Legs McNeil. More than a photobook, Punk stands as a museum-quality document of the CBGB generation and one of the most sought-after publications in the history of punk photography.
