Mark Weiss

Mark Weiss (New Jersey, b. 1960) is an American photographer whose work documents the rise of 1980s rock and heavy metal photography from within the scene itself. Beginning as a teenager photographing concerts in New York, he became a staff photographer for Circus Magazine, gaining direct access to the artists shaping the era.

His images follow bands such as Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Metallica and Guns N’ Roses across backstage environments, live performances, and tour life—capturing the visual identity of arena rock culture in the United States during the 1980s.

His photographs also appeared on major album covers including Slippery When Wet and Stay Hungry, contributing to the construction of the decade’s visual language.

The selection presented by TMPG focuses on this pivotal moment in music photography history, where image, performance, and mass culture converged—positioning Weiss’s work within the broader context of fine art rock photography and vintage music prints.
